There are two well-known answers to this, and the difference between them is the difference between two questions people often treat as one.
Name a color.
The first one that comes to mind. Type it.
Red when asked to name one quickly. Blue when asked for a favorite. Both figures get quoted, often as though they answered the same question.
They do not. "Name a color" measures which one is most available; "what is your favorite color" measures preference. A performer who predicts blue and then asks the first question has quietly bet on the wrong one. The count above asks the first question, deliberately.

Once this passes 1000 answers, the measurement replaces the claim above as the headline of this page, and the claim becomes the thing being checked rather than the thing being reported. Saying that in advance is the point: a threshold decided afterwards is not a threshold.
Asked to produce a color under time pressure, people reach for the one that is easiest to bring to mind — the most saturated, the most named, the one children learn first and traffic lights use for stop. That is red, and its advantage is about speed rather than affection.
Asked instead which color they like, people answer a different question with a different winner. Blue wins preference surveys consistently, and it is nobody's idea of the most attention-grabbing color — which is part of why it is restful enough to be a favorite.
There is a wrinkle worth knowing if you perform this. Asked to say a color, people tend toward red. Asked to write one down, the gap narrows — writing is slower, and slowing somebody down is the one thing that reliably weakens a psychological force.
The same effect turned up in the number work: measured cold, seven took 28.4% of answers; when the experimenter mentioned it first, that fell to 16.6%. Anything that gives the person time or a hint changes the number. It is why this study asks before it tells.
Match the prediction to the question actually being asked, which sounds obvious and is the most common way this force is got wrong. Predict red and ask people to name a color fast. Predict blue and ask about favorites. Mixing them is a bet on the wrong distribution.
